In any year, one in five adult Australians, and one in seven children will experience some form of mental illness.
A third of us will have a mental illness in our lifetime.
Spending on mental health services recently surpassed $8.5 billion a year, yet the system is still under pressure.
But it's not all gloom—there are many services making a real difference—and that's what the annual Mental Health Service Awards of Australia and New Zealand seeks to recognise.
Launching this year's awards is the former New South Wales governor Dame Marie Bashir, who before serving as governor was a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Sydney.
