Kim T. Mueser, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and Executive Director of the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University. Dr. Mueser’s clinical and research interests include family psychoeducation, the treatment of co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders, psychiatric rehabilitation for serious mental illnesses, and the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. His research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression. He is the co-author of over 10 books and treatment manuals, and has published extensively, including numerous peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Dr. Mueser has also given numerous lectures and workshops on psychiatric rehabilitation, both nationally and internationally.

Presentation: Enhancing Resiliency in Recovery from First Episode Psychosis

Dr Louise Byrne is a researcher with deep knowledge of organisational issues relevant to ‘lived experience’ mental health employment. Louise’s work is informed by her own experiences of mental health diagnosis, service use and periods of healing.

Louise is currently employed as a Vice Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at RMIT University, in the School of Management.  Louise was awarded a Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship in 2017 to conduct research on lived experience employment in the United States. During her Fulbright research, Louise was a visiting scholar within the Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health.  Louise is currently leading the development of a Framework for Lived Experience Workforce Development, funded by the Queensland Mental Health Commission.

In recognition of her work in this area, Louise has received several industry and academic awards and been featured on respected national media, including Radio National ‘Life Matters’ and ABC’s ‘Q&A’.

Presentation:  If we value lived experience, why is disclosure still fraught, and what can we do about it? 

Director of District 3, Micro-areas, Trieste Health Services Agency. She has a background in specialist nursing and rehabilitation.  Trieste is known as the City that Cares (La Città che Cura). Trieste micro-areas form an integral part of the health network, bringing together community members who are in need of assistance.  She will present an overview of the programs, how mental health is integrated into the health agency and the results of the latest research.
