Abstract: Mersey Care NHS Trust is based in Liverpool, England and provides a wide range of specialist mental health and learning disability services from community based services through to low, medium and high secure services (Ashworth hospital). From its formation in April 2001, Mersey Care has taken an innovative human rights based approach to the involvement of service users and carers. This paper describes what taking a human rights based approach to involvement means in practice and looks at a service user led evaluation which shows the very real difference a human rights based approach is making for service users and carers, managers and staff, and the trust.
