Abstract: The Wellington Mental Health Consumers Union Incorporated has been operating in the greater Wellington area since the late 1980s.

This paper will tell its story - the trials and tribulations, triumphs and tragedies, challenges, failures, achievements, the light side and the serious side and the big and small management, organisational and other issues it has faced over these years.

The incorporated society has survived and continues into the 21st century . The paper will consider why consumer organisations are needed and necessary, what are some of the challenges it now faces as a consumer organisation and consider some of the important current issues for the mental health services, its providers and recipients.

The Wellington Mental Health Consumers Union Incorporated has been operating in the Wellington area now for over 10 years. I have been in the position of manager for the past 3 years.
