Abstract: The Accommodation for Mental Health Society is an independent, community based society, for improving long term accommodation, support and related services for people with a psychiatric disability, on Auckland's North Shore. The Society is an example of a successful partnership between various statutory Government agencies and the community. The key feature is that while the Society has contractual obligations with these agencies, it remains autonomous and ultimately accountable to the community for the work it carries out. The support services provided are aimed at promoting and empowering residents' integration into the general community, through the provision of skills, options and choices. A supported employment service has done much to enhance the achievement of these aims. The Society believes that the closer services are to the "real" world, then the more effective they will be. Description of Facility/Organisation: Four residential properties; 3xfour bedroom, 1xthree bedroom. Administration offices provide the Society with a central location; supported employment services are also located here. The area serviced is in the North Shore of Auckland, consisting of a population of nearly 220,000. It is generally regarded as a relatively affluent area of Auckland; the effect of high national levels of unemployment, being mediated by local industrial development.
