Abstract: Most commonly, exploration of mental ill-health and homelessness is focused on how these complex issues may be linked in the lives of adults and youth. Traditionally, the needs of homeless children have been subsumed in responses to family homelessness. Currently, however, there is a growing body of research driving calls for urgent responses to the unique experiences of children who are homeless alone without a parent or guardian. This presentation explores what is known about unaccompanied homeless children in Australia and through drawing on new research being undertaken in Tasmania, illustrates the extraordinary challenges they face in accessing mental health support and care.
