Abstract: Two hundred skilled and enthusiastic people, including psychiatrists, social workers, medical officers, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, pharmacists, occupational therapists and psychiatric service officers, are working to and refining a strategic plan designed to provide comprehensive, integrated psychiatric services to a widely dispersed population of over 200,000 people in a rural region of approximately 40,000 square kilometres. They provide modern, community-focused psychiatric care for people suffering from serious mental illness, as well as providing a range of related assessment services, consultation and liaison for other general health-care providers, such as local family doctors and psycho-social support agencies, and community education. Description of Facility/Organisation: Bendigo and Region Psychiatric Services consists of a team of approximately 210 staff, working from a number of locations, (including a 35 year-old psychiatric and mental hospital) utilising both traditional and innovative skills, employing modern technology such as mobile telephones and pioneering the use of tele psychiatry. The team is delivering, and progressively refining, an integrated and comprehensive, community-focused mental health services across a rural region which comprises almost 20% of Victoria's land area and which has a widely dispersed population of about 205,000 people (4% of the state's total population).
