Type of resource: Video
Abstract: What needs to change to ensure that families and carers are not solely defined by their caring role, but have their humanity acknowledged through recognition and responsiveness to their rights? Attendees will be invited to participate in small group discussions considering questions on how (if) family and carers identify, conceptualise and articulate their rights, systemic rights violation and harms. The discussion will be facilitated by experienced family carer educators, advisors and researchers from around Australia, and will use pre-established vignettes of carer experience to help foster safe conversation around our rights. It is anticipated that there will be a ratio of one facilitator to around 8 attendee participants. Self-care is strongly encouraged, with peer workers, nature glimpses, and a quiet space are all available if additional support, or just some time out is required. We are aiming for respectful, safe and authentic family and carer discussions based on questions such as: How do you understand family, carer and supporter rights? What rights do families and carers hold that are not recognised, or responded to in the system? What harms occur when rights are not upheld for families and carers? This is an interactive activity; your views and insights will contribute to our collective understanding, and growing research in this area.
