Abstract: The NDIS represents a fundamental change to the way service provision is carried out in Australia for people with a disability, including people with mental illness resulting in psychosocial disability. Being - Mental Health and Wellbeing Consumer Advisory Group has received some positive reports from people once they have become participants. However, other consumers, carers and support workers have reported multiple issues that have arisen during the implementation phase. This paper will explore issues people faced accessing the NDIS, the experiences of those who chose not to apply and what occurred for those who were not considered eligible for an individual package. Debbie reads her personal account of the benefits of increasing choice and control for consumers and practical suggestions for the mental health sector in this new world.
