Abstract: In each Australian state there is a mental health act that regulates the provision of mental health services to those who are subject to involuntary treatment. Consumers can have specific barriers that make it harder for them to access information, whether the barriers in question are cognitive, or educational.
As a way of addressing some of these barriers over 2022, BEING collaborated with people with lived experience and with the NSW Ministry of Health to develop a set of new resources which will assist consumers to understand and navigate this complex legal framework.
We would like to promote the resources to conference attendees from NSW, but also to provide encouragement to other state based lived experience bodies who would like to progress similar lived experience development processes.
Learning Objective
Health service agencies are often not good at providing resources that are sensitive to people with lived experience and their diverse needs. Our resources are an example of how co-design can produce better resources for consumers than health service providers can produce without lived experience input.
