Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present information about Extended Treatment, Rehabilitation and Community Care Units in Queensland. These longer term residential facilities are still relatively unknown by many consumers, carers, mental health service providers and local government and non-government organisations. It is hoped that this paper will help demystify myths and increase awareness. Consumer and carer perceptions of living in Extended Treatment, Rehabilitation and Community Care Units in Queensland will be provided. Issues and challenges facing service provision will be highlighted including changes in client population, housing availability and community partnerships. The future of Extended Treatment, Rehabilitation and Community Care Units lies in harvesting hope, maintaining health and facilitating recovery for consumers and carers. After many years of hospitalisation, living in institutions and unsuccessful community tenure, the impact of Extended Treatment, Rehabilitation and Community Care Units will be evaluated.
