Abstract: As Brad’s story reveals, first time admissions into acute psychiatric wards can be very traumatic for both patient and their family or whanau. Brad, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, gives us an insight into his psychosis to help us make sense of his seemingly “naughty” behaviour during his first hospital admission. His experience and feedback come from a position of insight and this is of value because it may help health professionals rediscover the person behind the unfortunate symptoms. Brad does not have the freedom to present his own paper.
