Abstract: The Holyoake DRUMBEAT (Discovering Relationships Using Music - Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes and Thoughts) program is used by services across Australia and internationally to work with young people and adults who have experienced traumatic events and whose lives are impacted adversely due to these experiences. The DRUMBEAT program draws on both the cultural traditions of communal drumming as a form of community connection and healing, and the latest research into effective practice with people recovering from trauma - research drawn predominantly from victims themselves and an increasing understanding of neurobiology. The combination of these two approaches offers significant, practical support and a pathway to recovery; both have at their core the provision of a safe place for collaboration and empowerment.
