Abstract: The Joint Purchasing Project is a decision making partnership between consumers and the Northern Regional Health Authority's mental health section. The joint purchasing group is made up of 1 to 2 North Health staff members and 3 to 4 consumers. The group decides on the types of consumer-run initiatives they wish to purchase, call for proposals, and then decide on which proposals to purchase. So far there have been two completed purchasing rounds and a third is underway. Initially the project has been confined to the purchase of consumer-run initiatives. Consumers will probably be involved in the purchasing of other types of services in the future. Description of Facility/Organisation: North Health purchases publicly funded health services for the one million people living in the northern region of New Zealand.
