Abstract: Gregor Henderson states in his abstract that to meet the challenges of turbulent and uncertain times, new ways of thinking and acting across policy and practice in mental health need to be implemented and sustained. One area in mental health which has had a very poor history since deinstitutionalisation, has been the failure of policy-makers, mental health practitioners and the community generally, to develop the potential of family and friends in a person’s recovery from mental illness.
