Abstract: In this paper I first address some aspects of the question “are people with mental health problems among the most socially excluded in society?” Then I look at the question, “does social inclusion improve mental health and quality of life? Some mental health services do not appear to promote social inclusion – so I will consider briefly why this is the case. I then go on to ask:
What do socially inclusive services look like, and do they produce better outcomes? and report a number of examples. Finally I consider what we know about the conditions which favour socially inclusive services.
