Abstract: We are health professionals (GP and Psychologist), with many years of combined experience in the fields of health and education. However these skills did not prepare us for all the challenges involved in rearing our youngest son Patrick and continuing to care for him as an adult. Having Patrick in our lives has given us a unique dual perspective on Mental Health issues i.e. as Parents and as Professionals. The best outcomes are achieved if parents (carers) and professionals work together and have respect for each other’s role in caring for the individual with mental illness.
