Abstract: Music to Open Your Mind (MTOYM) is an annual community event in Fremantle WA which raises awareness of mental health. MTOYM is a free family concert and market day with live music, children’s activities and information on mental health issues and services. Importantly, MTOYM includes both mental health and physical health promotion messages. Music was chosen as the theme due to its capacity to attract people, its universal nature and acknowledged properties in enhancing health and reducing stress. Music is part of everyday experience and can be used as a means for positive transformation. MTOYM was first held in 2007. In 2011, MTOYM was held on 27 March with an attendance of over 2000 people. Music to Open Your Mind acknowledges people with mental health problems as valuable members of the community and celebrates the services and partnerships which help people affected by mental illness and their families and carers.
