Abstract: The Network was established in 1994 to increase consumer participation and empowerment at all levels of mental health services. Consumers are recognised and acknowledged to present the consumer viewpoint in the planning and management of services. Services are responding to consumers ideas, suggestions and concerns. The unique structure of the Network has involved over a hundred consumers from all sub-areas - Northern Beaches, Ryde, Hornsby, Kuring-Gai, Lower North Shore and Gladesville Macquarie Hospital. The Network receives recurrent funding managed by consumers. Consumer offices have been established and activities include participation in meetings, workshops, seminars and conferences; special projects, training; Peer Support Advocates; social activities; newsletter; consultants. Description of Facility/Organisation: Primary mental health consumer management and involvement program. Approximately 100 consumers involved in the Network. The NSAHS encompasses a geographical area of approx. 972 sq. km and comprises the local government areas of Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai, Ryde, Hunters Hill, Lane Cove, Willoughby, North Sydney, Mosman, Manly, Warringah and Pittwater.
