Abstract: Getaways is a planned respite service of Out Doors Inc. providing five-day holidays, in locations ranging from the beach to the mountains, to people with psychiatric disabilities and their carers. Holiday makers participate in the planning and preparation of their vacation and are encouraged to take part in a range of activities. These can include social activities, food, shopping, meeting with new people, experiencing new environments, and when appropriate to the needs of the group, participants can take part in more adventurous learning activities such as canoeing, skiing, bushwalking, etc. This process is not only beneficial for the individual consumer, but can serve to enhance and strengthen, and hence sustain, their ongoing relationship with their carers. Description of Facility/Organisation: Getaways is a planned respite program funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services for people with psychiatric disabilities, aged between 16 - 64, living in the Northern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne. Funding was received in mid-1995 to run seven five-day holidays over a 12-month period.
