Abstract: Collaborative practices are now well documented as increasing effectiveness and efficiency in response to service needs (Miller & Ahmad, 2003). Hospital School Services (HSS) is part of the Department of Education and Training Western Australia and provides educational support to both public and private schools students whose physical or mental health currently prevents them from successfully participating in their usual school, TAFE or alternative education program. For students with mental health issues referred to HSS, liaison with schools and families promotes and supports consistent communication between student, family and mental health service. It also provides a bridge for the school to access the specialist knowledge of the mental health team and for that team to better understand the challenges the student is facing in the school setting. This paper will present international, national and state perspectives and examine the competent and extensive educational services available to mental health services.
