Abstract: Paper from TheMHS Conference 2016 Book of Proceedings: People. Authenticity Starts in the Heart. The Conference was held in Auckland, New Zealand 23 - 26 August 2016.

This paper aims to give participants playful strategies, games and new ideas for working with children of parents with a mental illness or addiction (COPMIA). It emphasizes the importance of play in a child’s life, and explains therapeutic activities for counsellors to engage parents and family members to interact more fully with children of all ages. These strategies and games should be incorporated into an already well established therapeutic framework and are not designed to replace the need for training in the area of working with children. Building on current research about trauma2 and resilience3, this paper raises the question: How do we creatively respond to this research in clinical practice?
