Abstract: The impact of employment on recovery outcomes is well documented. Integration of vocational services into public sector mental health services is now recognised as an essential component of evidence-based psychosocial rehabilitation for people with severe mental illness. This paper describes the trial implementation of the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) approach in partnership between a government mental health service and two non- government Disability Employment Network services. The paper examines (1) The process of developing partnership agreements between the key parties, and (2) the challenges to implementation faced by the mental health service and its consumers, and how issues of cultural change and practical barriers were addressed through education and awareness raising, and the development of collaborative processes.
