Abstract: This paper will describe a challenging project conducted conjointly by the Northern Sydney Mental Health Services, the Association for Friends and Relatives of the Mentally Ill (ARAFMI), the Northern Sydney Health Promotion Department and the Northern Sydney Mental Health Carers Network. My name is Frank Flannery and I am the Deputy Director of the NSMHS and my co-presenter is Beverly Page, a carer of a daughter with a mental illness and a volunteer with ARAFMI. Beverley will provide a personal account of her experience as one of the 2 carers who conducted 9 staff focus groups, which were the core methodology of this study. I will provide a more formal account outlining the contextual influences that shaped this project as well as the project’s aim, objectives, methodology and results. We will conclude this presentation with a set of recommendations and reflect on the lessons learnt from this unique collaboration.
