Abstract: The nature and concept of recovery means it does not come with a single, simple definition that can be readily translated into the everyday practice of service delivery (Meehan, King, Beavis & Robinson, 2008). It is widely acknowledged that although recovery oriented service provision is a clear government policy direction for mental health care in Australia, this is yet to be fully realised in practice (Slade, Amering & Oades, 2008). The NSW Consumer Advisory Group – Mental Health Inc. (NSW CAG) and the Mental Health Coordinating Council (MHCC) have been working together to develop a resource to assist mental health community managed organisations in achieving recovery oriented services. This has resulted in the development of the Recovery Oriented Service Self Assessment Toolkit (ROSSAT) and Guide for mental health community managed organisations. It has been designed to assist organisations and staff to: 1. Assess their level of recovery oriented service provision. 2. Reflect on both individual and organisational practice in relation to recovery oriented service provision. 3. Identify areas requiring improved practice in delivering recovery oriented services. This paper provides an overview of the findings of the project and an introduction to the ROSSAT and Guide, a tool for mental health community managed organisations to assist services in progressing recovery orientation.
