Abstract: Lived experience storytelling is a vital component to mental health reform and needs to be supported appropriately to ensure we are ‘embracing change’ and not replicating ‘traditional illness management’ through its use. In this paper I critique practices within the mental health sector that capitalise on lived experience storytelling and suggest these practices have the potential to encourage re-inscription over resistance. I provide an alternative narrative of subversiveness as a way of opening up the space, and provide suggestions for ways we, both as service users/refusers and allies, may embrace the complexity and uncertainties of stories.
