Abstract: I’m going to talk to you today about what is mental illness and how our views on mental illness can reduce or increase discrimination against people with mental illness. I’m using the term ‘mental illness’ for linguistic convenience and because it is used by anti-discrimination programmes. I’m also using it because we all know what ‘mental illness’ refers to, even though there are many diverse views about the causes of mental illness and its validity as a concept.
