Abstract: As a patient of mental health services for the past 10 years, I have had my life devalued, undermined, become disillusioned, and generally lost direction in life. Mental health services don’t generally take into account all that is required to lead a meaningful, hopeful life. The realisation that severe and persistent mental illness is not the whole of my life, only a small part, has played a pivotal role in my discovery of a uniquely empowering program called clubhouse. This paper will chart my journey through my illness towards the self actualisation afforded me thanks to clubhouse.
