Abstract: Girrebala "awakening" is a creative and innovative program that was established in the Gold Coast District three years ago. Consumers, carers and rehabilitation staff have worked closed together to develop a comprehensive range of services that address the consumers' need to be able to live a satisfying and meaningful life in the community. Many initiatives in thea rea of the arts, drama and writing have been carried out to raise the prfile of mental health and to promote the talents and abilities of consumers. Girrebala has made a significant contribution to the field of mental health in the area of rehabilitation which has been reflected int he comments from consumers and carers and in the evaluation of the service. We believe Girrebala "awakening" has assisted consumers achieve quality of life through their participation in programs to develop skills and potential, gain friendships and support, and in providing opportunities for self expression. Description of Facility/Organisation: The Integrated Mental Health Service (IMHS) forms part of the Gold Coast District Health Service and covers the Gold Coast Region from Coomera to Coolangatta including the Hinterland area. Multidiscpliniary teams operate within the IMHS covering acute psychiatric care, continuing care and child and youth services.
