Abstract: The Australian Government established the National Suicide Prevention Office (NSPO) in early 2022 and tasked it with working across governments, portfolios, and sectors to drive the development of a nationally consistent and coordinated approach to reducing the rates of suicidal distress, behaviours, and deaths in Australia. An immediate priority for the NSPO is the development of a National Whole-of-government Suicide Prevention Strategy. The Strategy will build upon and operationalise the recommendations for suicide prevention reform outlined by the Final Advice of the National Suicide Prevention Adviser, and identify priority actions for governments to implement in order to establish a more comprehensive, integrated and effective national suicide prevention system. Dr Gardner will outline the role and structure of the NSPO and provide an update on the approach to, and progress on, the development of the National Strategy.
