Subject: Who talks and what do they say?

Type of resource: Video

Abstract: Lived experience of suicide and mental illness is utilised by organisations as a way to bolster or personalise suicide prevention initiatives or events; heavily focussed on suicide bereaved voice. In this talk the presenter explores the ways in which we invite, and also silence people with lived experience across organisations, social media and within our organisations. In this presentation we explore a national survey of 3000 participants reflecting on how they speak about their mental health distress, coupled with a content analysis of social media, podcast and traditional media exploration of lived experience and then identify ways in which organisations can ensure authentic inclusion of lived experience voice to shape their program delivery and challenge the inclusion of dominant voices.
