Subject: Suicide postvention support: Indigenous ways of responding to crisis and building community capacity.

Type of resource: Video

Abstract: This presentation provides insights on the innovative approach of Thirrili Ltd. to reducing the incidence of suicide among First Nations people in Australia. Thirrili Ltd. is a not-for-profit Indigenous organisation and the national provider of suicide prevention, postvention and after care services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people since 2017. Research and practice on responding to the crisis of suicide highlights postvention as an emerging and promising approach to suicide prevention among Indigenous peoples that takes account of intergenerational and historical trauma and the need to provide support services that are trauma informed and guided by the principles of self-determination. Suicide postvention and aftercare services make space for people to step into healing and provide a path to suicide prevention and building the resilience of Indigenous families and communities.
