Abstract: St Vincent's Hospital and Community Pscyictric Service in Melbourne is an are mental health service established in 1995 to provide specialist mental health services to the Cities of Yarra and Boroondara (pop 216,000. The service is affiliated with the University of Melbourne Department of Psychiatry. Since its inception, the Service has been committed to working Beyond the Boundaries to establish a climate of continous improvement for consumers with serious mental illness including a high percentage of people from non English speaking backgrounds, Kooris and itinerant people. Major changes over the past two years include the development of a new service model and organiational structure reflective of stata and national policies. Approximately 190 staff including Consumer Consultants work across four locations - inpatient unit, Community Care Unit and two Community Mental Health Centres. A full range of direct care services is provided in addition to statewide services. Description of Facility/Organisation: St Vincent's Hospital and Community Psychiatric Service is an area mental health service providing specialist services to those with serious mental illness living in the Cities of Yarra and Boroondara (population 216,000). The population services is weighted upward to 309,000 as a result of Victorian weighting formula and represents 6.3% of the VIctorisn population. The service employs approximately 190 staff. Services are provided from four sites - 39 bed inpatient unit, 20 bed residential rehabilitation unit and teo community mental health services each with approximately 400 registered consumers.
