Abstract: “ECT in young people” is a topic which may make certain sections of the audience and community recoil in shock itself or disgust. It is also a topic which, through the juxtaposition of “ECT” and “young”, directly challenges the unstated wish that children and adolescents, if not immune from psychiatric disorder should certainly be cocooned from physical psychiatric treatments, particularly those treatments that have often been portrayed (e.g. in the movies One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Frances), more as a sadistic punishment than an effective management strategy.
