Abstract: Australia's national effort regarding stigma in mental illness was initiated by our then national Health Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Brian Howe in 1993 94 who identified the need to enhance community understanding of mental illness, as a priority of the National Mental Health Strategy. A four year program with funding of $8 million was provided from 1995 to develop a national public advertising campaign to increase community awareness regarding all mental illness, with special reference to severe mental illness
