Abstract: Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre (CRCC) in partnership with Eastern Child Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS), EACH and YMCA developed the Strengthening Families and Carers Program for families accessing the CYMHS in-patient unit. Sessions involved a shared meal, activities as a form of supported respite; facilitated peer support opportunities for families and young people; enhanced communication between parents/carers, children and staff. Participants totaled 178 over the 5 sessions. Program addressed carer concern about resuming care of their unwell child. Survey responses after the event revealed that many participants felt an improved feeling of empowerment by knowing about available supports. Sharing a meal (100%) and participating in activities (90%) were rated most important aspects of the program with many carers reporting feeling less alone in meeting demands of caring (74%).
