Abstract: This paper discusses suicide-related issues arising in the context of mental health service provision. Risk identification is briefly considered in the light of the complexity and limitations of risk factor information, the emotive force of the idea of suicide, and the context of change in mental health services. The paper raises questions about gaps in research, training and service provision, and makes some broad recommendations about suicide-related intervention and prevention in mental health services. The paper introduces an Australian Psychological Society discussion paper which considers suicide and suicide prevention in a broader context.
