Abstract: The local Consumer Advocasy Group is actively involved in the development of the service and manages its own budget. The Service is active with community agencies in pre-vocational and vocational programs and an increasing number of Consumes are taking advantage of paid work opportunities. THe service has made the transition from one of the least funded in Australia to a leader in National Mental Health Standards in a very short time. THis Mental Healthservice provides 24 hour assessment and crisis response and support in community and hospital settings. There is immediate assignment ofa case manager at point of first contact. All Consumers access the service through community teams and Consumers presenting at the hospital are assessed by the catchment community team. There are no waiting lists and Consumers admitted to hospital are suppoted in discharge planning by community case managers. Very few consumers nee to be transferred away from their district to receive mental health care. Description of Facility/Organisation: Comprehensive Community based integrated mental health service with 50% of resources in community. Population - 300,000. Area served - approx 7000 sq km. Budget - $8.5 million. Staffing - 120 Full time equivalent. One of the fastest growing areas on Australia. Few clients transfers out of area.
