Abstract: In this paper we discuss our work with ‘survivors of psychiatry’ which attempted to answer back to ‘psy knowledges’ which accomplish ‘governmentality’. We discuss what we mean by ‘answering back’, and ‘governmentality’ and ‘psy’ and describe co-research with members of a peer support group of people with ‘lived experience’ of ‘mental ill health’. We attempted to (re)construct knowledges that counter and resist currently dominant discourses constructing both ‘research’ and ‘mental illness’ and to do so in ways that served the interests of the co-researchers involved and, more widely, the survivor movement.
