Abstract: In this symposium we talk about our journey, as part of an area mental health service, towards trauma informed care. This first paper in the Symposium introduces the concept of trauma informed care and its implications for recovering citizenship. This leads to the second paper, Sandy Jeff’s account of her lived experience of childhood trauma and mental illness. The subsequent third paper will look at a program manager’s perspective about why mental health services ignore trauma and ideas about what could change. Finally, in the fourth paper, work that has begun at NAMHS is described, including some of the challenges and how we are building support for this work.
