Abstract: The Mental Illness Fellowship Victoria was established by family members of people with schizophrenia. As the organisation has grown it has maintained its awareness of the burden on families and the need to provide support to carers. This paper examines the diversity of the situations and needs of carers who seek assistance from the organisation. Carer education and support in a group setting and the provision of a break through respite service are two supports provided by the organization. Well-Ways is a multifamily carer education and support program. There is now clear evidence of the efficacy of multifamily groups delivered in clinical settings (see McFarlane, 2002). We have promising preliminary findings for our Well-Ways course delivered in a community setting.
