Abstract: This paper outlines the content and structure of the current National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy in Australia and its relationship to the National Mental Health Strategy. The paper summarises some key issues raised in the international literature regarding national suicide prevention programs and outlines a range of approaches and strategies adopted in other countries for suicide prevention. It compares the Australian experience with strategies adopted by other nations and suggests some future directions.
