Abstract: Mersey Care NHS Trust is based in Liverpool, England and provides a wide range of specialist mental health and learning disability services from community based services through to low, medium and high secure services (Ashworth hospital). From its formation in April 2001, Mersey Care has taken an innovative human rights based approach to the involvement of consumers and carers including consumers who have experience of secure mental health services. This paper describes how being involved in decision making is making a positive difference to two consumers from the medium secure services and how their involvement is changing the secure mental health services provided by the Trust.
