Abstract: From a public health perspective people with mental illness have an unequal situation, compared to other people. In Sweden legislation regulates the conditions for all people in society. This legislation states: Health on equal terms for all people. All people should have the opportunity to live in such a way that their health does not get worse by a disability. Good and equal health – equal opportunities in terms of living condition and possibility of participation. Different studies in Sweden show that people with mental illness have an unequal situation compared to other people in society. This paper points out some very important issues where people with mental illness have a poor situation from a public health perspective e.g. financial position, work, education, security and participation, loneliness, unbalanced diet and less exercise, gender – women get less help, smoking and drugs.
