Abstract: The Australian Government announced that the government will provide $1.855 billion in new funding over five years to provide a range of measures for people with a mental illness, their families and carers in response to the shortfall in service provision. All parties to the Council of Australian Government (COAG) process are in agreement on the need for extra programmes to assist people with mental illness and their families and carers, as has been highlighted by the Mental Health Council of Australia and others. These services are provided by all levels of government and COAG, meet in February this year and just recently in July to discuss this important issue.
