Abstract: Promotion, prevention and early intervention (PPEI) comprise a major platform in the Second National Mental Health Plan (Australian Health Ministers, 1998) This symposium explores some of the issues related to implementing PPEI approaches in mental health services. These include the conceptual framework underpinning the PPEI approach and rationale for investment by mental health services in PPEI, along with current national policy directions and implementation issues. The symposium concludes with practical examples of how services can reorient to a PPEI approach to mental health.

Three papers are presented in this symposium:
Paper 1 : Conceptual framework for Promotion, Prevention and Early Intervention (PPEI) for mental health
Paper 2 : National consultation on PPEI: Implications for mental health services
Paper 3 : Building capacity for mental health: Reorienting services.
