Abstract: This paper presents the Northern Territory’s Top End Sub Acute Care Trial designed to reduce pressure on the psychiatric inpatient unit at Royal Darwin Hospital by providing short term intensive community based support to clients. The paper outlines the background for the development of the trial and contextualizes it with the mental health services sector in the Northern Territory. The paper also details the findings of the research project conducted to evaluate the trial. The trial has demonstrated good outcomes across all client outcome measures, particularly in rehabilitation readiness and self management of illness. There was greater variation for client outcomes of insight and medication management. Relationships with stakeholders and sector wide understanding of the model of service provision was also identified as areas requiring more work.
