Abstract: In 2004 the Mental Health Co-ordinating Council of NSW (MHCC) commenced work on the NGO Development Strategy: Mental Health, an initiative funded by and run in partnership with the Centre For Mental Health (Department of Health, NSW). One of the main focus areas for the Strategy is Workforce Development – that is: providing those working in the sector with the environment, training and resources to most effectively achieve their organisational and career goals. Extensive research and consultation was undertaken to develop a framework upon which to deliver workforce development initiatives. Most important amongst these is the establishment of a voluntary minimum level of training for those working in the sector, based on the Certificate IV in Mental Health Work (Non-clinical). MHCC is in the process of becoming a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) so as to offer this training in a manner that is tailored to meet the needs of the NSW NGO mental health sector.
