Abstract: This project will evaluate the use of a Shared Care Model for the assessment and management of depression amongst elders living in retirement villages in which care will be shared between the general practitioner (GP), the psychiatrist and other health professionals. The goals of the Shared Care Model will be: (i) To assist the GP in diagnosing and managing depression in the elderly through education, consultation and liaison provided by mental health professionals (ii) for the psychiatrist to assess patients and to initiate joint care in the GP setting when appropriate (iii) to assist retirement staff to identify, refer for medical attention and assist in caring for depressed elders and (iv) to explore models of collaboration between GPs, mental health professionals and retirement village staff in this area. This paper describes the background, aims, objectives and guidelines of the proposed Shared Care Model.
